Independent CHINESE CINEMA

The High Museum of Art partners with the Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Literature, Communication and Culture to celebrate Chinese film this April with Independent Chinese Cinema, a series of three acclaimed films.

Last Train Home  April 2, 2011, 8 p.m., explores the largest human migration on the planet by focusing on one couple, who represent their fellow travelers.

Senior Year  April 9, 2011, 8 p.m., is an in-depth examination of how a class of teenagers prepares for the national college entrance exams in China.

Suzhou River  April 16, 2011, 8 p.m., is a mysterious, modern noir film that finds its visual inspiration in the watery channel that runs through Shanghai.

    • Jia Zhangke, a director of underground and independent films, uses the marginal and the everyday to depict the reality and the consequences of China’s market reforms.


Dr. Qi Wang, Assistant Professor in Literature, Communications, and Culture, Georgia Institute of Technology

  • “Alternative Visions and Unofficial Historians of Post-Socialist China: Contemporary Chinese Cinema and Documentaries”
    • Chinese film makers function as historians and record keepers as they chronicle political and social concerns of their times.

In rural China a woman makes excellent sesame oil. A Japanese
businesswoman wants to modernize the mill, and the Chinese woman
agrees, hoping to use the increased profits to arrange a marriage for her
epileptic son to the girl he loves. The mother succeeds with the
arrangements and settles her son into an uneasy marriage.
